Benefits of Joining Beta Theta Pi

Brothers benefit from a vast network of resources that support their growth through graduation and beyond.

Wooden Institute

Leadership At Beta Theta Pi Fraternity

Beta Theta Pi actively recruits gentlemen, scholars, and leaders, and supplements their personal and professional development through award-winning leadership opportunities. As a fraternity brother, you’ll have access to a multitude of leadership experiences and resources to help you live a more principled life. With your participation in these programs, it is our hope you’ll be able to make a difference in your chapter, on your campus, in your community, and the world.

Beta’s General Fraternity hosts many of its own leadership experiences, such as the Wooden Institute, Presidents Academy, Keystone Conferences, Leadership College, and more. In addition to these opportunities, Beta has also partnered with the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) to provide sponsorships to the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI), as well as scholarships to LeaderShape, hosted by the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values (AFLV).

Leadership Within Beta Theta Pi

Beta, at the chapter level, offers a vibrant network of leadership positions to all of its undergraduates. Brothers may choose to hold various chapter positions from the food committee to the recruitment committee. They may rise to VP of finance, housing, recruitment, communications, and more. They may even aspire to be the chapter president. All the while, they will learn leadership skills that will endure.

At the end of your college experience, what will follow you off-campus? We hope you’ll make it a strong backbone of connections and the wisdom that actual leadership kindles. These skills and qualities burn brightly long after the glow of chapter events and casual friendships fade.

I am an incredibly proud member of Beta Theta Pi’s spring class. I feel as though I have found my family on campus, and I have experienced so many extraordinary moments with my brothers. I have discovered selfless mentors who have willingly given their time. I have had the joy and excitement of knowing that my pledge class contains so many people that I genuinely think will become my lifelong friends. I have been treated with such friendliness, and I have seen more than ever how Beta is working to differentiate themselves on Miami’s campus as a model for Greek life. As I continue my time as an undergraduate student here at Miami, I know that Beta will continue to provide so many incredible opportunities for me.

When I joined Beta in the Spring of 2018, I never could have imagined the impact that it would have on my life. Beta has allowed me to pursue values that I hold close, develop myself as a leader and a student, and has surrounded me with brothers who push me to be a better version of myself. I am incredibly humbled to be able to represent such an honorable group of men.

Alex Orr ‘21Major: Accountancy | Hometown: Kings Mills, Ohio

I started college with a set of purposes and goals: surrounding myself with the best characters that Miami had to offer and becoming the best character I could be. As it turns out, I could find the best in just one organization: Beta. The organization is more than just a group of friends; it’s a cluster of young men choosing to center their lives around core principles, like integrity, to grow into influential and impactful members of our communities. With all the support one would need, the seemingly unreachable goals we set for ourselves become much less daunting and more aspiring.

Caleb Schlenker ‘22Majors: Accountancy & Finance | Hometown: Wapakoneta, Ohio

I never intended to join a fraternity. A couple months into my freshman year, I received news that one of my high school classmates was hazed to death. After seeing the pain his family and loved ones went through, I stayed clear of Greek life. Then, one of my closest friends joined Beta and kept talking about what they stood for, how it was different, and how they were changing what it meant to be a fraternity. Once my friend took me to meet some of the brothers, my opinion changed drastically. These were not boys that were just in college to have fun. These were men that were motivated and had values that aligned with mine. Since being initiated, I have felt compelled to do more, to achieve more, and to excel more.

Christopher Walker ‘22Majors: Business Economics & Mathematics | Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

While I did not choose to join the brotherhood of Beta Theta Pi until the spring of my sophomore year at Miami, it feels as though that moment has defined my entire college experience. I am a dedicated chemical engineering student, but it is the intangible growth and intellect that I have developed during my time in Beta that has been the most impactful. My cherished time in Beta has empowered me to accomplish my highest collegiate goal: leave behind an impact that will, in fact, last for an age.

Hayden Hoogerhyde ‘21Major: Chemical Engineering | Hometown: West Chester, Ohio

When I came to Miami from Washington state, I only knew one other person, and I wasn’t sure where I would fit in. I discussed this with my friend, and he mentioned that it was essential to find people who I could respect, admire, and want to be around. Later in the fall, I met my current big brother, CJ, through a mutual friend while meeting for coffee. I enjoyed the conversation between us, and I realized that perhaps I’d meet more people like CJ if I joined a fraternity. In the spring, I stopped by Beta, and I really liked the atmosphere. I also liked how everyone I met was interesting and fun-loving but also treated each other and their guests with genuine respect. It was not what I had thought fraternities were like, and I felt that this was a place that would help bring out the best in me.

A House That Brothers Built

The Beta chapter house at Miami University traces its roots back to the late 1800s. The charm and history of the chapter house create a welcoming living environment for all brothers and guests. Residents must adhere to a code of conduct and uphold Beta Theta Pi’s substance-free housing policy.

The chapter house was completely renovated in 2018 and now features an expanded common area space, modernized bathrooms, updated climate control systems, a commercial kitchen, and a refurbished dining area. Speaking of food, brothers enjoy a full food service and meal plan with a dedicated cook. The chapter house is also equipped with a kitchenette, complete with 24/7 on-demand beverages and snacks.

Beta brothers may balance work and play in the library, executive board meeting room, hang out in their bedrooms, or spend some focused time in the study nook. Beta's New Member Recruitment

The success of Beta Theta Pi begins with our values-based recruitment process that identifies Potential New Members (PNMs) who align with Beta’s mission, vision, and core values. Our goal is to select future men of principle who are recognized on campus as gentlemen, scholars, and leaders.

Recruitment happens year-round with a focused period in both fall and spring semesters. The recruitment committee adds approximately 35-40 new members annually. The formal recruitment process officially begins in late January and in late August during an intense week of chapter recruitment events, outings, and meetings. During this time, members of the chapter get to know the PNMs and eventually extend bids to those who align with the Beta’s values.
